May has been another reasonable month with Patches (Col Lee) and Missus
Patches showing the way again with heaps of fish off Patches Beach. Each time they go out
they catch plenty of bream and whiting.
Anchors Away (Johnnie Cross) went down with the Patches Pair when the
access was closed and almost died hiking across the sand dunes and back again
so we decided to wait until we could take Migalloo along the beach. Now that the 4 wheel drive access to the
beach has been re-opened some of us old fellows might be able to get down there
and get amongst them.
I was most fortune to be asked to join the Patches Pair one evening to
fish for the bream off the RSL Wharf just behind the Cove Restaurant. Patches
is good mates with Danny who owns the Restaurant so a few of us went down one
night to fish for bream. Danny provided the bait which was a secret recipe made
up of chicken strips, sauces and cheeses together with copious paper cups of
red wine to keep us going throughout the night. The result was 11 good sized
bream including one just over 1 kilogram.
How's this for a stonker bream? |
The highlight of the night was later on at about 11.00pm on when we took the fish along to the cleaning table at the boat ramp adjacent to the Water Slide. The tide was particularly high and we cleaned all the fish and put them into a bucket to be washed. Unfortunately in trying to get water into the bucket Col tipped them all into the water on the high tide.
Now those of you who know Patches will realise that he is about four foot nothing wringing wet but he valiantly went in to retrieve the fish before they washed away. He managed to retrieve all the fish but in doing so he was up to his neck in the water. Suffice to say that after our night with Danny filling up our wine cups a really good laugh was had by all.
Report on the Sinkers
As I mentioned earlier we have not been as successful as the “Patches Pair” but nevertheless we have caught a few fish to keep our interest up.
Anchors away with a nice bream from the river |
There has been no sign of the tailor but the
weather hasn’t been kind for beach fishing and the blackfish haven’t appeared
along the main river yet.
We went down to Northern Rivers Seafoods by the Big Pineapple and bought
ten kilos of whole mullet for 2 bucks a kilo while the mullet were running. We
then filleted them and made up small bait packets for our freezer so we have
plenty of bait but we just have to find the fish.
Anyway Ian”Hammerhead” Hannaby and I
have found a new pursuit for those days when the weather prevents us from
fishing – we have taken over the kitchen.
When all else fails! |
Well that’s about it for this month so get out there and get amongst
them in June.
Cheers till next Month
