Chinderah Golf Report Friday 26th June 2020

On the last Friday of each month a group of Ballina Palm Lake golfers head up to the Chinderah Golf Course for a round of golf. This month we had one of our largest groups, with 20 golfers playing in, what turned out to be, perfect weather.  We welcomed three new members this month: Sue and Glen Grady and Bill Allison.

The competition was fierce (but friendly!). Serial bandit Doug Stinson had 41 points, after his 43 last month, but he was pipped on a count back by Michael Sherlock. Loris Daniels won the ladies competition with 36 points, beating Sue MacDonald on a count back also with 36 points.

Glen Grady won the nearest the pin, bragging to anyone who would listen that he beat Roger’s shot. Bambang won the Mars Bar for being at the wrong end of the field.

Next trip to Chinderah is Friday 31st July so, if you are interested in joining in, please let Bill Oliver (Villa 185) know. All are welcome.

Birds around Palm Lake

We have such an amazing number and variety of birds around Palm Lake Resort Ballina. As many of you know I have been practicing my photography by trying to snap as many of them as possible. Every week or so I will choose a bird to feature on the blog.

This week's bird is the Variegated Fairy-Wren
I have been lucky enough to spot a family of these fairy-wrens living in a few spots around Palm Lake Resort. Keep an eye out for it near the Dog park, the bridge on Magnolia Drive, and in the creek area outside my place, Villa 283.

For more info and photos of fairy-wrens around the resort you can go to my website by clicking on the link below:

Update from Residents Committee

FINANCE UPDATE FROM
THE RESIDENTS COMMITTEE.
21st JUNE 2020

Water Rates:
We have been in negotiations with Ballina Shire Council on two issues
concerning water rates.
The first is concerning what we thought was an overcharge which was brought
about by individual meter reading occurring at different times to the main
meter read. Yesterday we received an adjustment notice of $12,062.47 credit.

Our second is even more extensive and complex. We are looking at the
comparisons between Residential charges and Business charges as a dollar
comparison, current and proposed, with and without pension rebates, costs of
processing etc. At the moment we are heading in a favourable direction.
But, this is all subject to Palm Lake and Residents Approval to proceed and
Ballina Shire Council agreeing to change the rating category. We will keep you
informed.
Thank you
John Adlington.

HP Printer cartridges free to good home

Doug Stinson (Villa 252) has a brand new Combo Pack 61 comprising one black and one tricolour cartridge to give away.
He bought the wrong ones and as he had opened the parcel they won't take them back.

If your printer takes a HP 61Cartridge give Doug a call on 0412 663 872 to arrange to pick them up.

Dose of cuteness!

A new puppy recently took up residence at Palm Lake Ballina Resort and I managed to grab a few photos (and lots of cuddles).
Her name is Poppie and she is a very cute 10 week old Bichoodle.

She has her new mum and dad (Raelee and Bill Garner, Villa 161) totally besotted.
If you would like to check out some more photos of Poppie on my website

Good news story

Judith McPherson Villa 160 has some good news she would like to share:

I was thrilled to find out my son Dr. John MacPherson, who lives in Geebung, QLD, received an AM in Order of Australia in the Queen’s Birthday Awards 2020 “for significant service to people with a disability, and to access and inclusion” to quote the Govt. Gazette.

Johns works for the Brisbane City Council in area of access to buildings and other facilities, lighting at Ferries for visually handicapped etc. He commenced work with Brisbane City Council after he finished his education at St. Paul’s Anglican School. He did his Masters at U.N.E Armidale and his doctorate in Biology through James Cook Uni in Townsville.

John has been in a wheelchair himself since a car accident when he was 20 yrs. old. The accident happened when he was driving to the Palm Beach Surf Club on the Gold Coast where his father was a life member and was a “boatie” rowing the surf boats.

After his accident and a long stay in the Brisbane P.A. Hospital Spinal Unit – John returned to work at the Brisbane City Council Works Dept. and was transferred to work in the area he is in now.

He is a member of a number of different disability group organisations and always goes the extra mile to help people.

Fishing report May 2020 - Fish are still biting!

May has been another reasonable month with Patches (Col Lee) and Missus Patches showing the way again with heaps of  fish off Patches Beach. Each time they go out they catch plenty of bream and whiting.

Anchors Away (Johnnie Cross) went down with the Patches Pair when the access was closed and almost died hiking across the sand dunes and back again so we decided to wait until we could take Migalloo along the beach.  Now that the 4 wheel drive access to the beach has been re-opened some of us old fellows might be able to get down there and get amongst them.

I was most fortune to be asked to join the Patches Pair one evening to fish for the bream off the RSL Wharf just behind the Cove Restaurant. Patches is good mates with Danny who owns the Restaurant so a few of us went down one night to fish for bream. Danny provided the bait which was a secret recipe made up of chicken strips, sauces and cheeses together with copious paper cups of red wine to keep us going throughout the night. The result was 11 good sized bream including one just over 1 kilogram.

How's this for a stonker bream?

The highlight of the night was later on at about 11.00pm on when we took the fish along to the cleaning table at the boat ramp adjacent to the Water Slide. The tide was particularly high and we cleaned all the fish and put them into a bucket to be washed. Unfortunately in trying to get water into the bucket Col tipped them all into the water on the high tide.

Now those of you who know Patches will realise that he is about four foot nothing wringing wet but he valiantly went in to retrieve the fish before they washed away. He managed to retrieve all the fish but in doing so he was up to his neck in the water. Suffice to say that after our night with Danny filling up our wine cups a really good laugh was had by all.

Report on the Sinkers

As I mentioned earlier we have not been as successful as the “Patches Pair” but nevertheless we have caught a few fish to keep our interest up.
Anchors away with a nice bream from the river

There has been no sign of the tailor but the weather hasn’t been kind for beach fishing and the blackfish haven’t appeared along the main river yet.
We went down to Northern Rivers Seafoods by the Big Pineapple and bought ten kilos of whole mullet for 2 bucks a kilo while the mullet were running. We then filleted them and made up small bait packets for our freezer so we have plenty of bait but we just have to find the fish.

Anyway Ian”Hammerhead” Hannaby and I have found a new pursuit for those days when the weather prevents us from fishing – we have taken over the kitchen.

When all else fails!

Well that’s about it for this month so get out there and get amongst them in June.

Cheers till next Month

Strange bird wandering the streets of Palm Lake Ballina

Many residents have reported seeing a strange looking bird wandering the streets of Palm Lake Ballina and balancing rather precariously on their fences.

I have identified them as a Pheasant Coucal and there appears to be a pair that have made the resort their home. These birds seem to spend a lot of time in our backyards and have been spotted snacking on little green frogs.

Keep an eye out in your own backyard as these birds are hilarious to watch. They have very long tail feathers which makes it rather awkward for them to navigate. They tend to scurry along the ground, as their attempts at flying are very clumsy. During the breeding season they call to each other using a deep booming call.

I have finally managed to get a photo of the Pheasant Coucal and have put together an information card below.

A final exhibition of Barry Mason’s artwork

This year we said a sad goodbye to Barry Mason, an amazingly talented artist who called Ballina Palm Lake Resort home for the past few years. Barry had won awards in numerous competitions, exhibitions and shows for his oils, watercolours and pastels. His work is represented in galleries around Australia and is proudly hung on the walls of many people's homes, bringing pleasure each day.

Barry was a driving force in the establishment of an art exhibition showcasing the artworks of Palm Lake Ballina residents work held in April each year. This year we are holding a virtual exhibition instead, and are proudly including a small snapshot of Barry's diverse art collection.

Workshop - we need your help

A group of Palm Lake Ballina workshop volunteers recently built 24 bird boxes to assist local wildlife after the fires. These were gratefully received by the Lismore Wildlife Society and have been put to good use.

Bird box in use

They have recently received a new request for possum boxes, and due to a generous donation from Bunnings, have been able to put together materials for over 20 boxes.

If you would like to help out in the workshop constructing these boxes, please contact:

Michael Sherlock    Villa 231 Mobile 0402300336

Peter Kafka            Villa 238 Mobile 0417864626

If you haven’t used the workshop before you will need to be ‘inducted’ – please contact Ted (Villa 145: phone 2145) to arrange a suitable time.

Donations will be welcomed to be able to continue the work as requests have also been received from other wildlife societies.

Palm Lake Golfers hit the course at Chinderah

Last Friday (29th May) 14 Palm Lake golfers travelled to Chinderah to play 18 holes in a friendly competition.

This a regular event on the last Friday of the month. Everyone is welcome.

You do not need to be a member of a club as we will work out a handicap for you. Hit off is at 9am and the game costs $20 with a shared cart.

Normally we will take the Palm Lake bus and stop after the game for lunch and will do so again after the restrictions are lifted.

Doug Stinson was the winner last week with a score of 43 points. Looks like he has found a sport he might be good at as fishing hasn’t worked out for him so far.

If you are interested contact Bill Oliver at Villa 185 for further information.
